Where do the kids eat when school is out?
Once the school year lets out for summer break, over 7,000 of kids from low-income families in Fort Collins will not have access to the breakfast and lunch meals they receive on a regular basis through their school's free or reduced lunch program. During the summer months, the Food Bank's Kids Cafe program plans, prepares, cooks, and brings healthy meals to area community centers so no child in Larimer County has to go hungry over the summer. In 2010, Kids Cafe is expanding to serve seven summer sites to meet this increased need. During both breakfast and lunch, Kids Cafe provides a nutritious meal that enriches the mind and the body of our area's youth. The 2010 sites include CORE Center - Fort Collins, Fort Collins Boys and Girls Club, Northside Aztlan Community Center, Harmony Road Kids Cafe, Loveland Boys and Girls Club, Maple Terrace Apartments, and Wellington Boys and Girls Club. Children attending summer school at Irish, Putnam, Tavelli or Bacon also receive a nutritious snack provided by the Food Bank. Kids Cafe summer meals and snacks are funded through the federal Summer Food Service Program.
