Return to In-person, Client Choice Shopping

For more than 18 months, the Food Bank has been operating a modified food distribution process at our Fresh Food Share pantries. Instead of clients coming inside to select the food that is right for them, we have been distributing food via a drive-through model where everyone receives the same food. All of this is, of course, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our need to keep staff, volunteers and clients safe and healthy.

While the change to a drive-through model has not been ideal, it has allowed the Food Bank to continue distributing food at our pantries during the pandemic without interruption. But beginning Tuesday, October 5, the Food Bank will once again welcome clients into our Fresh Food Share pantries.

Why is this announcement important? First, it signals a return to in-person, client choice shopping that we feel is a critical component to how our clients access food. All of us need food, but we also deserve the dignity and respect that comes from choosing what is right for us. Second, we believe this return to “pre-COVID” processes signals that we are moving away from a pandemic that has caused so much grief and isolation. Finally, we are excited to showcase some of the upgrades we have made to our client choice shopping.
