LARIMER COUNTY — The Food Bank for Larimer County announced today that the nonprofit organization has received a $20,000 grant from the Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors Program. The Food Bank was chosen to receive this grant because of its commitment to connecting qualified individuals with existing federal meal programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women Infants and Children (WIC).
The grant funds will be used to support the Food Bank’s SNAP Outreach team. This compassionate team provides crucial support to people navigating the benefits process, including bilingual services and outreach efforts. In the last year alone, they helped 1,184 households apply for SNAP. Thanks to their work, $3.1 million in economic benefits was injected into the Larimer County community.
“This generous donation from the Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors Program will help the Food Bank for Larimer County address hunger issues in our community by connecting individuals in need with federal meal programs and help to ensure our neighbors have enough food to put on their tables,” said Amy Pezzani, CEO of the Food Bank for Larimer County.
Founded 40 years ago, the Food Bank’s mission is to provide food to all in need through community partnerships and hunger-relief programs. The nonprofit today provides services to more than 50,000 people facing food insecurity.
Nourishing Neighbors is a charitable program of the Safeway Foundation and seeks to ensure at-risk children, adults, seniors, and families have access to the food they need to thrive. More than 150 local food banks and community organizations, such as the Food Bank for Larimer County, will receive Nourishing Neighbors grants so they can conduct outreach and provide SNAP and WIC enrollment support for neighbors in need. Additionally, Safeway offers online SNAP access and educational information in all stores.
“There are millions of people in this country who need access to nutritious food and qualify for federal food assistance programs, but they don’t know how to enroll or get the support they need,” said Kristine Staaf, Safeway’s Sr. Director of Public Affairs “By partnering with nonprofit organizations like the Food Bank for Larimer County we know we can help make a difference in the lives of our neighbors who are facing food insecurity issues.
