Growing up, I spent the majority of my summers in carefree bliss — after I did my chores, of course! There were endless days on bikes, exploring the woods while playing out scenes from Box Car Children and going to the pool with my aunt.
At the Food Bank, we believe every child deserves a carefree summer to grow, play, and learn. With 12.3% of Larimer County’s kids facing food insecurity, summer can mean more than a break from school — it can also mean a disruption from reliable, consistent meals received through breakfast and lunch programs.
Thanks to the dedication of our community, the Food Bank is able to fill this gap. Our Lunch Lab food truck for kids distributes free lunches to families all summer long.

Throughout the summer, we expect to produce 5,700 meals and 1,700 snacks weekly for our community’s kids. As of mid-June, we have distributed 20% more meals as compared to last year. With the cost of basic needs like food and health care out of reach for so many, we know that these dependable, no-cost meals are a source of relief for our local families.
This vital service wouldn’t be a reality without volunteers and donors fueling the mission. Every morning, volunteers show up to our Nutritious Kitchen and prepare hundreds of made-from-scratch meals for kids. These meals are not only nutritious, but kid approved and include favorites like pizza, tacos and hamburgers with sides of fruits and vegetables.
Once prepared, the meals are loaded for delivery. The free lunches are distributed at parks, libraries, and neighborhoods, where families are already gathered. There is no sign up or registration required. Any youth 18 or under are welcome to get a meal. By meeting people where they are, these efforts help reduce barriers and ensure that healthy food remains in reach.
As we head into summer, we encourage people to get involved, whether through volunteering, donating or visiting the Lunch Lab with their kids.
Every hour spent volunteering, and every dollar contributed supports the futures of our community’s kids, ensuring that they get the nutrition they need to maintain energy, confidence, and momentum. With good nutrition, our community’s kids have the best chance to return to school ready to thrive.
